Efficient charging even under unfavorable light conditions

The MPPT solar controller series includes modern, high quality, microprocessor-controlled devices for the controlled charging of lead batteries within solar isle systems. The MPPT function (Maximum Power Point Tracker) assures the use of the maximum solar power at all times.

The MPPT solar controllers by IVT are perfectly suitable:
  • For solar systems whose panel voltage is significantly higher than the battery voltage
  • For solar modules which are partially shaded (for example by trees or satellite receives on the roofs of mobile homes)
  • In the case of low respectively diffuse light (for example, in winter or at low stratus)
  • In northern latitudes, where the temperature of the solar module remains low despite the sun radiation

Important characteristics and features

MPPT charging characteristic – highly efficient, fast, battery-preserving

+
Maximum Power Point Tracker (MPPT)
The most efficient working point of the solar module (MPP) changes depending on various factors such as, temperature, radiation power and the type of the solar cells.

The technology hidden behind the MPPT regulation continuously determines and uses the maximum power exploitation of the solar modules. At this, the voltage surplus from the solar modules is converted into a higher charging current. This higher charging current assures a shorter battery charging time.

Automatic recognition of the system voltage

+
This MPPT solar charge controller is suitable for operation in 12 V and 24 V solar systems. It independently detects whether a 12 V or 24 V system is connected.

Optical operation indicator

+
The MPPT controller is equipped with several LEDs and provides the user with comprehensive information about the current operating status of the system. The different LEDs provide information about the solar input side (solar voltage is present), battery status (charging/discharging/battery full/battery voltage low) and load output status (on/off).

Power-saving standby function

+
In case of insufficient solar charging power, the solar charge controller is set to standby mode. The self-consumption is reduced by more than 90 %. The connected battery is protected and unnecessary discharge is avoided. As soon as sufficient solar voltage is present, the solar charge controller automatically returns from standby mode.

Extensive protective functions

+
All important protective functions such as overcharge and deep discharge protection are controlled fully automatically and without monitoring via the microprocessor.

Protection against overcharging
When the end-of-charge voltage is reached, the solar charge controller switches off the charge current. Overcharging and damage to the solar battery is prevented.

Protection against deep discharge with automatic load disconnection or load connection
The deep discharge protection with automatic load disconnection or load connection ensures that the solar controller switches off the load output as soon as the battery voltage drops below the minimum voltage. When the battery has been recharged and the battery voltage rises above the reset voltage, the solar charge controller automatically reconnects the load output.

Short circuit and reverse polarity protection
The controllers are protected against short-circuit by a blade fuse as well as against reverse polarity. If the battery is connected with reversed polarity, the LED associated with the input lights up.

Protection against overheating
The MPPT solar charge controllers are protected against overheating. A built-in temperature sensor ensures that the charge controller is automatically switched off if it heats up too much. As soon as the charge controller has cooled down, it switches on again automatically.

Non-return valve
All IVT solar controllers are standardly fitted with a non-return valve.
In the case of too low solar power for example, at dusk or at night, the non-return valve prevents the discharging of the battery via solar module.

Multi-stage charging technology – Perfect for lead batteries

+
The charging process is perfectly adapted to lead-acid batteries.
Charging takes place in a multi-stage process.

1. main charging phase
The battery is charged up to a voltage of 14.1 V (28.2 V) with maximum current.

2. timer phase
The battery is kept at a voltage of 14.1 V (28.2 V) for several minutes.
The duration of the timer phase is determined by the type, age and quality of the battery.

3. charge maintenance phase
In this phase, the solar charge controller applies pulses to the battery, thereby dissolving the sulfate layers that have formed (desulfation function). The battery voltage is maintained at 13.7 V (27.4 V).

4. standby phase
In this phase, no charging current flows. The voltage of the battery drops slowly.

Automatic temperature compensation

+
During the charging process, the prevailing temperature is determined via the external temperature sensor and thus the charging end voltage is dynamically adapted to the temperature conditions.

At high temperatures, the end-of-charge voltage is reduced – overcharging and unnecessary gassing are avoided. At low temperatures, the charging end voltage is increased and the batteries can be optimally recharged.

Step-up function

+
The MPPT solar charge controllers are equipped with a step-up function.

Advantage: The solar charge controller charges even if the solar voltage is lower than the battery voltage. Here the maximum charge current is 1 A.

Monitoring and evaluation via remote display

+
A remote display is available as an optional accessory for the MPPT series solar controllers.

By means of the remote display for MPPT solar charge controllers, you can display the current operating data during runtime. Furthermore, it is possible to save the operating parameters with date and time as a *.txt file on an SD card1 and evaluate them later on a PC if necessary.

The data recording takes place in 10 second intervals
  • Date (DATE)
  • Time (TIME)
  • Battery voltage (U1)
  • Battery current (I1)
  • Solar voltage (Us)
  • Solar current (ls)
